Planting Hydrangeas-Tips and Techniques

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Recently I went to a meeting of  The Herb Society of Nashville.  The speaker was Troy Madden who is very knowledgeable about horticulture.   Maybe you have seen him on the popular show The Volunteer Gardener.  He was kind enough to present a slide show on planting and growing hydrangeas.

Although hydrangeas are not an herb, I was delighted to see his presentation because hydrangeas are one of my favorite perennial bushes.  Ours are stealing the show right now in our garden.

Here are some tips on how to get your hydrangeas to bloom well. First, one of the main points Troy made, is that people often think that hydrangeas are a shade plant.  Therefore, they are stuck in the woods and owners wonder why they don’t bloom well.  This is not true.  To bloom well, give your hydrangeas several hours of full sun each day.
